The Japanese Camelia is a low-maintenance evergreen plant with tough, leathery leaves that often feature prominent serrations. However, in order for the plant to thrive, it requires an acidic soil, as most soils tend to be only slightly acidic or neutral. As such, it is crucial to prepare the flower bed or pot before planting by fertilising with Ericaceous fertiliser. Once established, it is recommended to fertilise the Camelia whenever it is flowering, or when the leaves start to lose their green colour, especially if they turn yellow.
The half-standard variation of Camellia Sasanqua has a stem height of merely 100cm. It serves as a beautiful choice for topiary, be it placed in pots or as an architectural element in the ground. Placing two of these specimens, one on each side of a door or pathway, adds a captivating touch to any garden, directing the way to another area. However, it's important to ensure they are situated in a sheltered location, protecting them from harsh winter winds, especially those originating from the East.
Camellia sasanqua flowers much earlier than Camellia japonica, provides a useful flowering period from October to December.
Camellia sasanqua 'Cleopatra' boasts stunning pink flowers and is an Autumn blooming variety. With smaller, tougher leaves than Camellia japonica, it can be trained as an evergreen tree for a unique flowering display in the garden.
Our clear stem standard trees have been expertly trained and pruned in the nursery, ensuring a perfectly straight stem until the canopy begins at around six feet tall. Once established, they require only a gentle annual prune despite being slow growers. We offer specimen trees in two sizes, and the leathery dark green leaves of Camellia japonica prefer partial shade over full sun.
It is important to plant Camellia sasanqua in a sheltered location to avoid damage to its leaves and form caused by extremely cold winter winds.
For proper soil preparation, we recommend digging a hole that is twice the size of the Camellia's root ball. Next, fill the hole with high-quality Ericaceous compost mixed with some soil. This will provide the new root with soft and nutritious material for optimal growth and strength. Soil must be Acid, it is fine to plant in lightly acidic soil, with ericaceous fertiliser in April, July and October.
