Carpinus betulus ‘Fastigiata’, commonly known as the Upright Hornbeam, is a highly regarded deciduous tree valued for its strong vertical form, reliability, and versatility in the landscape. Well suited to gardens of all sizes, Carpinus betulus ‘Fastigiata’ provides a narrow, upright habit that makes it ideal for screening, boundary planting, or creating structure in tighter spaces. This cultivar develops a dense columnar crown with fresh green foliage in spring and summer, turning rich yellow and copper tones in autumn. As the leaves dry, many are retained through winter, offering a degree of privacy even when dormant. Carpinus betulus ‘Fastigiata’ can be grown as a clear-stem standard or allowed to develop lower branching, and it responds very well to pruning if a more formal appearance is desired. Its dependable growth, tolerance of varied conditions, and refined form make it a popular choice for both contemporary and traditional garden settings.
