The feijoa, scientifically known as Acca sellowiana, is a small evergreen tree belonging to the myrtle family (Myrtaceae) and shares a relation with guava. Commonly referred to as pineapple guava or guavasteen, this tree is native to regions in southern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and parts of Argentina. It thrives in mild, dry climates and is highly cultivated for its delectably sweet fruit.
Introduced to southern Europe in 1890 and later to California around 1900, the feijoa has gained popularity in various regions. The fruit itself can be enjoyed fresh, boasting a unique and pleasant flavor. It is also utilized in the creation of jams, jellies, and crystallized treats. Additionally, due to its aesthetic appeal, the feijoa tree is cultivated as an ornamental plant in certain locations.
