Ilex Nellie R stevens - Pleached

Ilex, commonly known as common Holly, is an excellent choice for creating evergreen pleached trees that offer instant coverage. These specimens are particularly suitable for screening unwanted views or neighbouring properties. This much-loved favourite is hardy and easy to grow, and its stem is pruned to ensure it is perfectly straight until the canopy begins around 160-200cm Ilex 'Nellie R Stevens' trees are not particularly vigorous, but they do have the potential to grow tall once mature, making them ideal for screening buildings. While they are slow-growing, they require only one firm pruning per year. We offer specimen trees ranging from three to over five meters in height. The leathery dark green leaves and red berries make for a wonderful display during the winter season.

 

Clipping: Holly is easy to clip by hand or with hedge cutters.

Leaves: Evergreen, much smoother and less spiky than English Holly and ovate.

Girth: 10-12cm  

Flowers: Tiny, white and fragrant. Blooms in spring.

Berries: masses of berries that turn red for autumn, and will be there for most of Winter too.

Wildlife: The berries are great for the birds.

Soil Ph: Wants high acidity. Ericaceous compost.
