Magnolia Grandiflora, also known as Bull Bay, is an excellent evergreen tree that can be used to provide privacy by screening your garden and house from unwanted views or neighbours. These trees are often grown as standards or to about 6 feet high where the canopy begins. By planting them tightly against your fence, they create a 'hedge in the air' effect with the canopy starting at fence height. Compared to planting a hedge, these Magnolia trees save space in your garden as they do not have any foliage from the ground up to the canopy. Their canopies can be pruned once a year to keep them in a compact shape, providing privacy without taking up too much space or light. These evergreen trees will screen all year round. Magnolia grandiflora is a medium-sized, bushy tree with large, evergreen, leathery leaves that have a distinctive brown under leaf. It produces enormous white flowers that bloom in summer and into autumn. They can be grown as standalone trees or trained to grow against a large house or wall.
