Quercus ilex, commonly known as the Holm Oak or Evergreen Oak, is a highly valued evergreen tree prized for its dense foliage, durability, and strong architectural presence. Well suited to larger gardens, estates, and structured landscapes, Quercus ilex provides year-round screening and structure thanks to its thick canopy of glossy dark green leaves. Young foliage can appear slightly spiny, resembling holly, while mature leaves develop smoother edges with a pale grey underside. Over time, this tree forms a broad, rounded crown supported by a sturdy trunk with dark, fissured bark. In addition to its ornamental value, Quercus ilex produces small yellow catkins in spring followed by acorns in autumn, which are beneficial for wildlife. Native to Mediterranean regions but widely grown across the UK, this resilient species tolerates wind, coastal exposure, and urban pollution, making it an excellent long-term structural tree for both traditional and contemporary landscapes.
