These plants are larger specimens that exceed the size of typical hedge plants. Their primary feature is their width, which is achieved by light pruning or feathering to create a very bushy and full specimen shrub. This classic evergreen is a popular choice due to its dense, medium-sized growth and its ability to thrive in various conditions.
Pruning photinias is best done after the fresh and lush red growth has turned predominantly green, unless you plan to use the plants for hedging. In that case, more frequent shearing is required to encourage the shrub to push out a flush of new growth at every cut, resulting in a solid-looking shape with new surface growth filling in the outside of the shrub.
