Collection: Rootball

Root ball hedging trees are field-grown and lifted with a ball of soil around the roots, usually wrapped in hessian to hold it together. Because they grow in open ground, they are often more mature and bushier for their size, making them ideal for instant screening. Lifting does involve some root disturbance, which is why root ball trees are best planted during the dormant season (typically autumn to early spring), allowing the roots to recover and establish. They are also generally cheaper than container-grown trees of the same height, offering excellent value for larger hedging projects.

Container-grown trees are raised entirely in pots, so the roots remain undisturbed at planting, which reduces stress on the plant and can lead to more predictable establishment, especially outside the dormant season. This is one of the main advantages of containers, as it allows for planting almost all year round, provided conditions are suitable. While container trees are often more expensive for larger sizes, they offer flexibility and ease, whereas root ball trees are typically the more cost-effective choice for long or tall hedges.
